<2023.1H> Global Car OEM Battery Supply and Demand Outlook (~2035)

‘Alliance and merge’ is an expression to describe the current situation in rapidly-changing car market where OEMs have been trying to look for a way to survive by cooperating with their competitors.

In the supply chain of electric vehicles, alliance and merge has been accelerated. GM from the US, which has kept a close relationship with LG Energy Solution, newly established a joint venture with Samsung SDI. Stellantis reached out to both LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI almost at a time. Hyundai Motor Group, which installed LIBs from LG Energy Solution and SK On to electric vehicles in regions other than China, started to adopt CATL battery eventually.

Given these circumstances, can we estimate how much LIBs those OEM groups install to their EVs? What is the ratio of prismatic or pouch type cells? In the mid to long-term, battery from which makers would be leading the market? These are some of questions we often received from our clients.

SNE Research has been studying the entire supply chain for global electric vehicles from battery to its materials. Based on the research outcome and global OEMs’ EV technology development strategies, we have come up with answers to above questions. This report provides an outlook till 2035 for which LIB maker’s product would be used by major global OEMs and LIB makers’ market shares accordingly. We also forecast the ratio of each batter type (cylindrical, pouch, prismatic) and that of LFP battery. Based on this future estimation, we believe this report will help our customers make a more detailed projection on LIB market demand.
